“The year was 1965, and I was brand new to a college where I did not know a soul. My "Difference of One" was getting involved with our campus radio station. ("WOBC, AM and FM in Oberlin, Ohio, the station that serves you right!" I used to say.) I was a Top-40 DJ there with my own weekly radio show, playing the Beatles, the Stones, Motown, whatever was hot. I had absolutely no prior experience, but when they put out a call for volunteer announcers, I thought "Why not?" There was a great deal to learn, and my first attempts were pretty awful, but by the end of it, I was putting out a halfway decent radio show.
So my advice to you is: Take a risk. Try something new and different and interesting. I had more fun and made more good friends through my campus radio station than any other part of college. Whatever campus organization might be a cool adventure for YOU, go for it!”
